My Story

When driving home one day, I started yelling at the radio because they were talking about the opioid epidemic and not presenting any solutions to the problem.   I had worked with people with opioid addictions and people at the end of their life, on hospice.  I had looked at pain management from many angles.  Physical pain, emotional pain, people that want to stop all the pain, and people that think they should just suffer through.

When pain became the 5th vital sign,  we did start paying more attention to patients’ pain levels but didn’t allocate any resources for working with and understanding pain.  Doctors were being pressured to get patients’ pain levels down to zero without time to understand the full sensory and emotional experience of the pain and it’s impact on the patient.  And, insurance was not covering most alternatives to pain management – just pills.

Now, besides not having a comprehensive understanding of pain, we are expecting that we shouldn’t have any pain and so developing an adversarial relationship to all pain.  In reality, as we go through life, we will all have pain.  How much pain and how adversely it impacts our life will vary greatly.

I hope this site can be a resource for everyone, no matter where you fall on the spectrum, to learn and share.

We need to learn to explore the pain, see if there is anything we can learn from the pain, and skillfully work with the pain to change it or to accept what can not be changed.
